PSW’s in Ontario assist individuals with the tasks of daily living, providing a range of health care services in a variety of settings. The range of services provided by Personal Support Workers depends upon the individual needs of each person they support and may include personal care such as dressing, personal hygiene, mobility and other routine activities of living in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act, home management such as shopping, light house cleaning and meal preparation, family responsibilities such as routine care giving to children, and assisting with social and recreational activities.

Accreditation: Upon successful completion of all graduation requirements students are eligible to receive a NACC Personal Support Worker 2022 Certificate issued by Stanford International College.

Admission Requirements

  • A Canadian High School Diploma OR General Education Development Test, OR Equivalent*
  • *Equivalent: Foreign credentials must be translated in English and assessed for Grade 12 equivalency by a
    recognized organization such as WES (World Education Service )  OR
  • Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years of age and pass a Superintendent approved qualifying test (Wonderlic SLE) (Driver’s license and/or Birth Certificate and/or current Passport are acceptable to prove age) AND

If English is not a student’s first language, they must provide proof of English competency. This must be
demonstrated through one of the following options:

  1. IELTS – Int’l English Language Testing Services – Minimum average score of 5.5 with no subject test
    score lower than 5.5;
  2. TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet based test (IBT) – Overall 80 with the minimum in
    each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20;
  3. CAEL: Overall 60 with no section below 60
  4. Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) with a score of 7 (no section score below 6).
  5. Canadian Language Benchmark Tests with a score of 7 in each strand (not an average of 7).
  6. Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 95.
  7. Pearson PTE Academic with a minimum score of 46.
  8. NACC Written Entrance Exam (passing score of 60)
  9. Evidence of successful completion of 2 consecutive years of full-time equivalent post-secondary study
    in English at a Canadian institution.
  10. Evidence of successful completion of 2 consecutive years of full-time equivalent post-secondary study
    in English at an institution outside of Canada.
  • Signed Vulnerable Sector disclaimer (Students must provide a ‘Clear’ Canada Wide Police Clearance of Criminal Record including Vulnerable Sector check within 45 business days of commencing program) AND
  • Signed Medical Disclaimer (Students must provide a signed Medical Report within 45 days of commencement of program: Medical Certificate (Immunization Form) is required indicating that the student is fit to complete all components of the program, has up-to-date immunization and to the best of their knowledge is free of communicable diseases. Immunization for Seasonal Flu and Hepatitis A&B is recommended (and may be a requirement for Community and Clinical placement and employment

Practicum Requirements

  • Completion of all course subjects with a minimum grade of 70% per subject
  • Achieve a 'satisfactory’ rating in each of the skills performance demonstrations
  • Have achieved/or have current Standard First Aid and CPR (HCP-Healthcare Provider Level)
  • Submission of a ‘Clear’ Canada Wide Police check including Vulnerable Sector check
  • Submission of a complete Medical Report indicating the students is free from communicable disease, has up-to-date immunization status, and has a level of fitness sufficient to complete clinical placement
  • Clear Covid-19 test within one week of commencing practicum and/or other expectations in accordance with Public Health requirements

Graduation Requirements

  • Minimum mark of 70% in each NACC Module
  • Achieve a minimum mark of 70% with NO critical deficiencies in each of the Skills Performance Demonstrations
  • Successful completion of all theory hours and all Practicum hours and skill requirements
  • Successful completion of the NACC PSW 2022 Final Comprehensive Theory examination
  • Have achieved/or have current Standard First Aid and CPR (HCP-Healthcare Provider Level)
  • Submit a professional Resume to be used for employment search

Graduates may work in long-term care facilities; for providers of home care services giving care to clients living in their own homes in the community and in supportive housing settings, group homes, and hospitals. PSWs also provide services in adult day programs, educational facilities, and many other settings. NOC: 3413
